Condoms don't protect against AIDS

that is what a young friend of mine told me when I gave him a free condom for The Great American Condom Campaign.
WHAT!!!! He tells me that the fibers in the condoms are larger than the AIDS virus. I asked him where he learned this and he said in 8th grade sex education class.
Yeah and people actually want to believe that the abstinence only sex education works!!! This is why there are so many more teens with STDS I bet. They basically decided that what's the point of using a condom if you have a chance to get the disease if you do or not.

I freaked out. Told him that it was contraception misinformation and gave him some extras.

Now I am worried about all the teens out there who do not have someone correcting this misinformation .

  2. It's completely misinformation. Working for AID Atlanta (AIDS Walk Atlanta) has taught me plenty.

1st, having met a young married couple, Danielle and Robbie, that are sero-discordant: meaning one has HIV and the other doesn't - I saw undeniable proof that if people just make the effort to use condoms, AIDS is completely preventable.

2nd - Getting tested every year is the best thing you can do for yourself and any partners you may have. AIDS doesn't discriminate - old, young, male, female, gay, straight, any race - it doesn't matter. Atlanta is a major HIV/AIDS epicenter again (5th largest # of cases in US) and cases are on the rise because people simply refuse to know their "status."

Get tested and use condoms. Not hard at all.

Just FYI on June 25, you can go get tested at Underground Atlanta via AID Atlanta FOR FREE from 10 am - 6:30 p.m. as part of National HIV Testing Day. There will be councilors on hand and plenty of info for all.

  3. I cant help but think that this child is of mediocre intelligence at best and simply didn't comprehend the part of the class which explained that latex condoms are effective contraceptives and preventative measures against AIDS infection, when used properly, versus lamb skin condoms, which are still available and while effective at preventing pregnancy, the AIDS virus is too small to be caught in by the larger pores of this natural material. All things considered, society is doomed anyway, so while this is unfortunate, in the grand scheme of things it's really a non-issue.
